Today, internships are all the rage. But 10 years ago, that wasn’t the case. When I was growing up, my summers consisted of working as a tennis camp counselor, running a summer camp in our backyard, volunteering on a boat and teaching science to at-risk fifth graders. It’s not that we had it easy, but we were allowed to be more free in our activities. We weren’t thinking about building our careers, and we didn’t know what our goals were — we were simply exploring life.

Young professionals today tend to be much more strategic. According to NACE, 80% of college graduates have taken on at least one internship, compared to only 10% 30 years ago. Today’s generation of students and job seekers are getting in there and gaining experience in a meaningful, results-oriented way. [Forbes]
